Durban – A man was seriously injured after he was stabbed with a broken beer bottle at a tavern on Harley Street in Margate on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, paramedics responded to a stabbing at a local tavern just before midnight on Saturday night

Herbst said reports indicated that two adult males got into an altercation that resulted in a fight breaking out.

He said a 30-year-old man sustained serious injuries during the altercation.

“(The man was) stabbed with a broken beer bottle numerous times in the face,” he said.

Herbst said the injured man was treated at the scene by an advanced life support paramedic.

Once stabilised the patient was transported to hospital for further care,” he said.

“Circumstances leading up to the incident will be investigated by the Margate SAPS who were on scene,” said Herbst.

In a separate incident on Saturday, security company Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram reported that a 26-year-old man was seriously injured after he was shot and stabbed multiple times.

Balram said Rusa received a call for assistance from an off-duty Sergeant from the KwaMashu SAPS requesting assistance for the injured male.

He said the officer informed the controller on duty that the scene was in the vicinity of a sugar cane plantation in Inanda but could not provide the exact location.

The Rusa Robinson R44 Helicopter lifted off from Verulam – KZN Helipad at approximately 4:08pm to assist in the search for the injured male. He was eventually located lying next to a sugar cane plantation,” he said.

Balram said the victim was found to have sustained a single gunshot wound to his chest and multiple stab wounds to his back.

“He informed Reaction Officers that he was robbed and attacked by a group of males. He did not provide any further details,” he said.

He was treated for his injuries on scene before being transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition, he said.

In an incident on Friday, Balram said a man was seriously injured after he was allegedly stabbed by a friend during an argument in Cottonlands in KZN on Friday.

Balram said a white Hyundai H100 bakkie arrived at Rusa offices at approximately 2.34pm requesting assistance for the injured man who was bleeding profusely from a stab wound to his head.

“According to the victim, he and a friend began arguing when the suspect produced a knife and stabbed him. He then fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim did not provide details of what led to the altercation,” he said.

Balram said the man was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital.
